RoboCup in the UK

We (AllemaniACs RoboCup Team) are right now at the HP Lab Bristol, UK to participate in the Dutch Closed tournament. This event is part of the 2AD conference about "technologies for life". HP sponsored the whole trip with fligths to Bristol and a nice hotel nearby (with a nice single-bed room for me :-).

Yesterday we have been to two pubs checking out local beer flavors and I have learned the game of Skat, or at least the rules :-) Now I have to learn how to play it...

We are setting up right now and doing some hacking on new and old code. And we set up a tunnel for Lutz' mails through two notebooks, netcat, and ssh tunnel and the mail server at university. That's kinda fun ;-)

Fedora hassles

There is a lot noise on Fedora People these days discussion the way RedHat deals with the Fedora project. There is a really informative mailinglist post on the fedora-devel-list describing the problems. Hopefully RedHat will open up to the community to get some new software in...

Although many Fedora developers mind not to be another Debian I still would like to see a package system more open than the current system. This might clear out some repositories available online with packages...

Fifth sentence on 23rd page

Some funny idea that Helgar opened to the gang: Grab the nearest book, open it on page 23, locate the fifth sentence and write it into your blog. Here is mine:

His characteristics must go well with the strengths of the center forward and of the side attacking midfielders.

From a football book (Coaching the 3-4-1-2 and 4-2-3-1) here at the RoboCup team room.

Body feels good

We where swimming this evening and although my endurance would get a pretty bad value in a RPG it was fun and I feel great! Have to go jogging tommorrow to get fit for the summer.

Now listening to the Matrix Revolutions soundtrack (which was the only good thing to say about the movie) and hacking some code (or better: trying to find the hooks I need in Gaim)...

Hack the planet!

Life live

OK, since Helgar is buging me (and probably also Buck, Tob and Medha...) to write something here is a blog entry...

Geek stuff:
I got really excited about Voice over IP lately. I don't really know how this came but it is flowing through my mind all the time. First we (see about the gang above) discovered GnomeMeeting an H.323 (after trying this in 2000 with Hardware VoIP cards with horrible results) which worked pretty well (after getting it working through our firewalls). And about a week ago I talked to Markus about this and he reminded me of sipgate. So after reading about it and some other companies offering VoIP servives I registered about 20 minutes ago :-) You get a PSTN number and really cheap rates... If this works as goog as I expect it to work this will replace my ISDN line and will save me some money :-)
Of course this means that I'm thinking about what cool software I'd need :-) GnomeMeeting does not (yet) have SIP support and I will need a SIP voice box :-) I'm planning to buy a hardware phone so I will probably need some kind of "knock phone offline" command for roaming. And of course the Übertool would be a Palm handheld (or what you prefer) with internal WLAN and Bluetooth, that can connect to the internet via some kind of Open HotSpot, has a BT headset and a nice software to connect you to the world of VoIP...

Non-Geek stuff:
I finally managed to turn the last semester into a kind of successful one by passing linear algebra and computability and complexity classes... This semester is going to be hard work. Four classes to pass and a lot of work for the RoboCup team to do.

But first Anne and I will have a (very) short vacation and at last some holidays next weekend. We will drive to the Netherland's North Sea coast after visiting Apenheul (a park where apes are running around and you need to grab everything that is yours before the apes do :-).

And the next big thing to do will be to wipe out the bed and buy a new sofa-bed for my room...
