This books describes the Jabber protocol and how to use it to write custom applications using it. It's also useful if you want to setup and configure your own Jabber server.
It describes step by step the Jabber XML-style protocol and how to integrate it in your aplication. The example code includes CVS notification via Jabber, a dialup system watch and RSS news agent (and a lot of snippets that can be helpful).
