Bad bashing

To get a red user name (for instance for the root) user you should not use

export PS1="\033[0;31m]\u\033[0;39m]@\h:[\w]\\$ "

in your .bashrc but rather

export PS1="\[\033[0;31m\]\u\[\033[0m\]@\h:[\w]\\$ "

Not the extra braced that you need to put inside. In both cases it will look the same. But only in the latter case you will have correct carriage returns and newlines on multi-line commands.

While working on this article I found out that I needed to extend my article parser. Doing a strip_slashes twice isn't as harmless as I thought. This is clear if you think about it. Note to myself: Think about your code in the future.

OpenVPN with NetworkManager

I adapted the vpnc-part of NetworkManager to support OpenVPN. You can find the source package on my NetworkManager patches page.

Plan and reality

I'm sitting in the university library. I came here to work on a seminar paper that has to be finished until end of November. In fact I looked around and saw a paper a student next to me was reading to learn German. It contained some keywords I had heard of before but which I didn't remember what they where about. So I went to Wikipedia and read about the Milgram experiment. This one is really interesting and reveils some interesting questions about yourself. But even more depressing was reading about the Stanford Prison experiment. Especially the links related to the prisoners abuse in Iraq are intresting. This study is more than 30 years old. But as it is stated in the conclusion no one learned from it?

Web Montag

Yesterday Tob and I attended Web Montag which is a meeting about Web 2.0 in a broader sense. There where some presentations about interesting projects. One which particularly interested me was Plazes. This is what Open HotSpots could have evolved to. Unfortunately they do not have a Palm client (yet?) so I couldn't use my new TX at the Hallmackenreuther.

Had some interesting conversations with Thomas Wanhoff from WWWW and some guys from Wikipedia. Interesting to see stuff others are working on - more or less here in the region around! It seems that there are strong plans to have that kind of meeting again, I'll be there :-)

A couple of ideas I had came back to my mind. Really need to get some work done too finally find some time to work on the interesting stuff. December, definitely, will be a month for nice projects! Basta! Need some time for this to really have something to talk about. Will update the idea section of my wiki soon with some of the stuff. Maybe there are more people out there interested to work on that kind of stuff...

There are some picture over at Flickr Webmontag tag. Especially have a look at this one ;-)

More informations can be found at del.icio.us, technorati and taggling.

Manchester Airport

I just found out that the wireless network at the Manchester airport almost successfully prevents internet access, but not HTTPS... Another reason why you should secure your site :-)
