New year

Happy new year everybody. Hopefully more peaceful than last year though...

We had a nice party in Berlin with a couple of friends! Was fun. Now need to go to sniff some more Berlin air.

21C3 101 - I hack so I am

The 21C3 is over now. It was pretty cool.

Today I heard a talk of Emmanuel Goldstein (editor of 2600 magazine) about protesting in the new millenium. As I already heard a talk from him I was expecting another good essay about things going on. And he did. He told us about some weird things that happened to him during his travels and protesting against Bush. Being arrested for filming some people protesting peacefully was his most notable point that he documented with the film he made accompanied by side stories like ACD documents (that is a kind of request to get the personal data about you deleted if the case is dropped after half a year) which was denied to some people because they already requested an ACD a couple of years ago (which they shouldn't know if all the information would have been deleted after half a year...). Great talk.

Then we (Medha, Buck, Tob and me) tried lock picking. And it worked. I could open two locks within half an hour or so. Great. Need to try that out some more.

Then the hacker community had fun with the security highlights 2004. Interesting what kind of things had drawn their attention. Need to have a wider look for this. Interesting foreseeing for next year. More mobile exploits expected, especialy in combination with new techniques like ZigBee. More fun to come :-)

Now Anne is here and we are going to explore some parts of Berlin for a couple of days. So we will be in Berlin vor new year's eve. Great!

21C3 100 - Passive Covert Channels

Had no breakfast yet. I'm hungry. But talks are interesting, so I stay.

Arrived about a quarter to 11am. First Buck and I listened to a talk about newest things going on around with TCPA. How can people be so stupid and really think that this will make anything better!? Only the big companies will benefit by locking all content into their chains of money flow...

The next talk was about passive covert channels in the Linux kernel which was really interesting. She (probably the only female talker we will encounter during 21C3) described a way on how to hide information in the initial sequence number of a TCP stream. This could be used to transfer sniffed passwords or whatever gathered silently to the next gateway (not further though). That was interesting. All the information can be found on the mentioned page. Live demo was interesting.

Right now I'm listening to a talk about Bluetooth attacks. Some live hacking included. Fun so far. Medha and I used this possibility to create a small Bluetooth PAN to connect him to the internet via my 802.11a card. Just another way. Let's see what we get tommorrow :-)

21C3 011 - Atari 2600

This day ends. And it was a good one. Saw a couple of interesting talks, a few boring and/or redundant ones. Should make a list of talks I attended to remind myself...

Played with Tob on Phil's old Atari 2600 (the 1982 four-switch version). There a really some cool games for that machine! We shot air planes, ran over the street as a cangaroo with cars driving by and played some tennis. Nice! Also played Pacman, the original. Yeah :-)
